I guess when you’re a wild animal, you can’t do anything behind closed doors, so these Japanese macaques let their desire for inter-species breeding out into the open.
The alarming footage shows the gang of monkeys mounting female sika deers and trying to actually have sex with them.
The bizarre phenomenon of cross-species sex has only been recorded once before when an Antarctic fur seal was sexually harassing king penguins.
It’s almost like their biology isn’t designed to fit together as the snow monkey struggles to ‘get it in’, before giving one of his compadres a turn, Mashable reports.
A new study published in the Primates journal, based at the Japan Monkey Centre, explains:
Although Japanese macaques are known to ride deer, this individual showed clearly sexual behaviour towards several female deer, some of which tried to escape whilst others accepted the mount.
Interestingly, researchers have tied this behaviour to humans, saying it is a ‘key element’ in understanding why people try to have sex with non-human animals.
Apparently the answer is ‘male deprivation’ – so basically the male monkeys get so desperate for sex they resort to a different species.
