It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Ed Sheeran is a genius lyricist. When his musical pen touches paper, every lyric that flows forth is practically guaranteed to be a poetic masterpiece. And that’s not an exaggeration, believe it or not.
Apparently, Ed Sheeran writes so many songs at such a fast pace that he doesn’t remember he wrote them sometimes. And even those songs scribbled and recorded in haste are legendary. Take the case of Justin Bieber and Diplo’s latest hit, « Cold Water. »
« [Cold Water] was a weird one because I didn’t even know that song existed, » Ed told Carson Daly in a recent interview on 97.1 AMP Radio. « It was a song I must’ve half-written somewhere at a time where I was writing a lot of songs. »
It wasn’t until Diplo got a hold of the song by chance that Ed even realized he’d laid down a chart-topper. « I got the email from Diplo just being like, ‘Yo! That ‘Cold Water’ song is dope! Can I have it?’ and I was like ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.' » And the rest is history.
To this day, Ed has not been being able to write a song that’s not a certifiable ear worm, and yet, he doesn’t always think his songs are good enough.
In the case of « Love Yourself, » the only reason Justin Bieber was able to get his hands on it was because he didn’t like it enough to put it on his own upcoming album, Divide .
« It just wouldn’t have made it, and then Justin took it and did his thing on it and released it as a single and made it what it is, » Ed explained.
« Love Yourself » went on to score a nom for Song of the Year at the Grammys. « It just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off, » Ed mused.
