Sorry, guys. But your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread that you’ve been smearing on your toast and fingers is not pronounced « nut-tell-uh. » Turns out, it’s actually « new-tell-uh. »
Don’t believe us? Watch the commercials and listen carefully:
Think we’re still pullin’ your leg? Take a look at the company’s FAQ webpage :
« Nutella (pronounced « new-tell-uh ») is a tasty, unique spread made from the combination of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk, and a hint of cocoa. »
But before you all completely lose your minds, there is one thing you should know. Ferrero, the makers of Nutella, reportedly told Buzzfeed UK that they don’t wish to enforce a universal articulation. In other words, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re #TeamNewt or #TeamNut.
« In the UK we call it and pronounce it « nut-tell-uh » as do consumers. The US pronunciation is just for them, » they said.
Still, it’s pretty hard to come to terms with. You can be rest assured that we aren’t the only ones who simply can’t handle this madness :
Couldn’t have said it any better, @sophvolkswagen. So many feelings right now.
